I just got my new Nikon D5000 yesterday and just took my first outdoor photo. I'm new to digital SLR's and look forward to learning how to maximize my photo-taking ability. This was taken with one of the kit lenses (55-200mm VR). It's just a quick snapshot. I'm trying to feel out the lenses and camera.

Thanks! It was a toss up between the Canon t1i and the D5000. I did my research and decided on the Nikon. It seems that the Nikon reviews were more positive than the Canon, and I've always been a Canon guy. I have now officially switched. Actually, you take some sweet pics and you've inspired me to make this investment.

haha glad i made you spend the money. actually, two friends of mine just bought nikons in the past couple days because they like the pics i take.

the next best investment you can make is a speedlight, like the sb-600, 800, or 900. these work wonders for fish photography :D the d5000 cant wirelessly trigger the speedlight though, allowing you to use it on top of the tank. youll either need a long hotshoe cable, cheapy ebay trigger, or nikon's su-800 which transmitts all TTL metering info to the flash :)

Yea, I recall reading that the D5000 does not allow for wireless triggering. It almost made me stretch for the D90, but I decided to hold back. I was just at Bestbuy and noticed the Speedlights you're referring to. They're on my wish list. I had to get me a couple of UV filters to protect my 2 lenses.

the other thing that i hated about D5000 and lower models is the lack of an internal focus motor meaning you can only use the AF-S lenses which are expensive!! for example, i can use an older AF-D 50mm f/1.8 which i can get for about $80. the AF-S version which will autofocus on your camera is about $500

As a matter of fact, I purchased my Nikon from Amazon. They've got great prices.
