I've heard that there is an evolutionary arms race between the newts and garter snakes as well. Another interesting aspect of their toxicity is that it is highest in the Mid-Willamette Valley and decrease as you move farther from it. British Columbian specimens have almost no toxin, the Northern Californian and Idahoan specimens have comparatively little.
