I wish I could get paid a ridiculous amount of money to play a game that Im supposed to love and have a large portion of the year off! Instead I have a JOB I love, a decent salary and hardly any time to take a vacation.

If you were any good you could

well, the mlb is a perfect example of a league where they players make more then the owners....look how thats turned out. how'd that 252 milllion contract alex rodriguez got from the rangers work out? Rangers filed bankruptcy last year...granted, they did make it to the world series though. Do you collectively with your other co workers make more then upper management in your company? i'm not sure why the nfl should be any different. Owners have profit in mind, players have themselves in mind, throw off that balance and the fans are the ones that suffer

If the other MLB owners did what the Steinbrenners do for the Yankees, and reinvest in their teams instead of milking them as a cash cow, then there would be parity.
Note that the Yankees didn't win, didn't even get to the W.S last season, and also note that when the Yankees ARE in it the TV viewing numbers go way up.
On the owners rich list the Steinbrenners, although mega rich, are far down compared to most other owners, yet the Yankees subsidize most other teams through revenue sharing. Yes, the Yanks have a big market, but for years in the 70's, the "CBS' years, before George Steinbrenner bought the team, they were terrible, due to lack of owner investment.
Contrast the Yankees with the Mets, who have a terrible underperforming team despite a mega rich owner and the same NY market as the Yanks.
So its not just the money they spend, but also spending it wisely.
Now....if you have a supreme talent at something, be it sport (A-Rod)or art (Picasso)or science ( Jobs or Gates) , shouldn't you be able to profit from that in a capitalist society, or are you saying socialism is a better system?
:)
Owners and players need each other, perhaps the owners need the players more than the players need the owners, and the players have a very short professional lifespan, especially in NFL, plus the large risk of life threatening brain injuries.
The T.Rangers are mentioned, but their previous owner, Tom Hicks, is a billionaire who milked the team , just like GW Bush did when he bought in for $800k of borrowed money in 89 and cashed out for $15million in 98.
The A-rod contract was silly, but he put butts in seats and drew enormous crowds. The contract that really killed them was chan ho park.
Personally I agree many athletes are overpaid, but I blame agents like Boras for that, not the players who are only following the rules of capitalism and doing what any of you would do in the same situation: getting the most they can for their talent.

So true. My whole childhood I kept telling my mom I should be out playing basketball instead of studying too! See where studying got me? Shot at! lol

I agree, alot of them are overpaid crybabies.. I think the 1 thing they need to make a big change on is the price Rookies are paid.. I thing they should pay them $100,000 for their 1st year and make them EARN the big contract for their 2nd year and beyond. It sucks to see guys fresh out of college making 20-30+ million contract and never taken a pro field.

Here's my take;

For the owners;
If you own a multi-million dollar "business", you can expect high pay. Sports team owners are no different than Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerburg. You charge what the market is willing to bear. That's the whole point of capitalism, which we all take part in. If people didn't want to pay it, and didn't, I guarantee prices would go down. (Simplistically put)

For the players;
There are actually ways of crunching numbers to figure out the true value of a player. You also have to keep in mind that a players value is not necessarily calculated based on his skill. It is about the total value ($$) that he could potentially bring to the franchise. This includes endorsement deals and advertising campaigns as well as putting fans in the seats.

I can see the frustration of a rookie being paid more than a 5 year all-pro veteran, but at the same time, rookies draw a lot of hype and a lot of attention. That translates to more dollars for the organization. So in one way of looking, it makes sense.

You should never expect a player to make as much as the owner. That whole thought process is ridiculous to me. That is the whole point to owning an organization, to bring profits to the shareholder(s). Would you expect the owner of your company to pay you exactly what he makes? No, you are just an employee. The players are just employees of the NFL. They are not paid to sit at a desk and answer phone calls, but they are paid to play football.

That is all for now.

If you don't like teams being able to buy the champion ship, stop buying there tickets.
Stop paying for sports TV, stop going out and buying there hats, gloves, and other ****.

Eventually, they'll be broke, And then you can buy them...and see why the managers wanted to grab all the money they could while they had a chance.

I don't like the idea of an 18 game regular season. It just shortens the average players career and the very top teams will probably rest their best players at the end of the year anyway. Plus, at that rate, the Super Bowl will be played at the end of February/ early March!

That being said, the NFL has some deep problems that need to be fixed. The #1 issue is rookie salaries because those are insane and capable of eating a team's profit for many many years. JaMarcus Russell cost the Raiders tens of millions in salary, but also think about how many good or even Pro-Bowl level players they could've signed for the money they paid him.
