I always get a kick out of non blacks calling each other the N word...I hear them do it almost every day at work.

Why use such a mild example? Go for true bigotry

Ha, the n word is used as a term of endearment but let me drop it in public and you won't see people of all races go good for him! That guy is just showing his pride! Lame cop out.
Should focus on the meaning of the word and not the later intent

lol, I don't consider Redskin that derogatory, myself. I thought it was a good comparison.

Neither do most black people so it's valid. Lol. I was gonna use a g@y slur but that's sure to bring in the boys in red. Remember how casually g@y use to be thrown around growing up though? No one was referring to same sex people. I just think its lame to say "but we don't mean it in that way" as a reason to continue doing something some people find wrong

It's not a mild one, or rather, it was just as damaging in the 1800's to the Irish immigrants as the n- word. It's not considered racist (wrong word really, nationalist maybe) anymore because on the whole, they started using it amoungst themselves, turning it into a pride thing so now it can just be shrugged off instead of causing fights.

And actually, I do cheer when the n- word is used in public as a term of endearment. Why? It's the only way to take away the power of the word much like the Irish and Italians have done with their racist slurs.

I guess I'm just sick of it all. I'd rather discuss how pathetic the redskins are on the field then the name on their apparel and uniforms. They haven't been relative in my lifetime. Living off past glory. No wonder they hold onto their name

To me it seems easier to change it then splitting hairs over which native and how many are offended which is what the debate always turns into. Like there's some magical percentage that makes it valid

I don't agree with that either, that word meant happy. Even if we were talking about those people, how/why is it derogatory?
Also let me add, its not the name thats offensive, its what comes after the name, thats offensive, the regalia, the chants, etc.. To you guys its a costume, not to us.

You lost me there. Sorry. Mainly on your second part.

If it helps g@y isn't the word I was considering using.

Percentages matter I guess. Why let a vocal tiny minority change things? That wouldn't work in business. If 90% of your customer base is happy, but 10% cry for change and you cave in and change, you then loose that 90%. That's death to a business. The NFL is a business.

I agree, we should be laughing at the on the field issues rather than be talking about this. Which is why I don't think non Natives shouldn't be trying to force this through. Maybe it's different in the DC area, out west here it doesn't seem to matter to our locals. I guess I just don't see getting up in arms about it if most either 1) don't care or 2) have adopted it as a pride source much like other races have. We could be too removed out here since I don't see anyone upset over it. I'd actually like to see the numbers. I mean, if they did poll and say only 2% of the Native Americans found it still offensive, do you still change? 5%?

I'm not on the east coast, it might be a much higher percentage out there, have no clue. But the only people I see shouting and waving their arms and calling it offensive on the news are rich white people. Who cares what they think.

But you know it will come down to the bottom line, if it starts to affect the income of the owners, it will get changed. If not, they will drag their feet.

That's where you and I vary. Percentage doesn't matter to me. Too many people don't take a stance one way or another to even get a true percentage.

Id be surprised if the name doesn't change in our lifetime. Too much noise around it to keep fighting it every 6-8 months and a whole heap of sensitive no discipline equal rights entitled kids growing up right now and gaining a voice. It's the cool thing to do nowadays.
