Nicaragua Fish Collecting Trip

Actually it was more of a fishing trip, but my daughter and I did collect about 40 fish for the lodges many aquariums. Besides the huge Dovii I put in my other post, here are some of the fish we collected. Some released, some put in aquariums , and a couple eaten.

That dovii is massive…must’ve been a battle getting that landed. Also, what’s the fish in the 2nd pic?

I got quite a few Dovii that size and a couple bigger. They pull extremely hard and try their best to get back into the snags where they live.

That fish is called a Machaca.

Only Machaca I could find was Brycon costaricenisis. Looks similar and I never knew there was a fruit eating brycon out there

Yeah, they eat all kinds of stuff. It seems like they try to grab almost anything that falls in the water.

Were you sight casting any of these species, or just casting to likely fish holding structure?

The latter. The fish were almost never visible. Machaca in particular like shady areas, and the guapotes hide in the sticks and ambush things that go by.
