Took my male well over a year to lose his horizontal line. And he still can show it depending on mood. So that is not always a sure fire sign. Only the males will have spotting in the fins. Female dorsal is usually more blue and translucent (see through). The scales on the male are also outlined in a darker color and more visable.

Love the Black Ruby Barbs. They are always active and dont die on me like Tiger Barbs seem to do. Seem to be less aggressive towards each pther too

Thanks Bill, I was a bit worried that the black ruby barbs might be too small but they do well in your setup so i am going to give them a try. My largest nic does have spotting on the dorsal fin but it seems like my 3 other nics have slight spotting aswell. Although, the others aren't showing much color so maybe time will tell.
