Nice places to live in CA?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I lived in tahoe for 5 years. We called it poverty with a view. Its hard to find a monogamous mate there, so it's not too fun if you are single and looking. Most people import thier girlfriends. Hard to find work, but if you get something year round you are likely to keep it for a long time, since many people only go for the summer or winter and then quit thier jobs. If you are just renting it's not too expensive. Its just that you won't make much money either. I had a nice 3 bed 2 bath 2 story house with 2 fireplaces, garage, fully remodled pimp pad for $1500/mo but only made $12 an hour. To compair, I now have a 2 bedroom appartment in the bay area, and they just raised rent to $1,800 a month.

If you want it REALLY quiet go for north shore(kings beach, tahoma, Tahoe city) if you are looking for a little bit of action south lake is the best. In the city of S lake tahoe you will be in the heart of all the limited action, or you can try for meyers about 10 miles from the lake where you can feel like you are in the midlle of nowhere but still have bars clubs and casinos within a short drive. Make sure you have a reliable 4 wheel drive, plenty of candles and flashlights, blankets, food, etc. There were times we had over 6 feet of snow and no power. Its fun if you are adventurous enough :)

The foothills of Placer and El Dorado counties are quite popular and are getting expensive, but it's hard to beat the proximity to a medium/big city (Sacramento) coupled w/ the ability to live out in the woods. Auburn, Placerville, Colfax, Foresthill, Georgetown, Camino, etc., are some of the towns in this stretch of the Sierra Foothills. There are literally tons of foothill towns, ranging from Oakhurst in Madera County all the way up to Nevada City/Grass Valley in Nevada County, and then on up to Downieville/Sierra City in Sierra County. Good stuff!

I love Downieville , my family and I go camping up there 3-4 times a year . There is a nice little spot about 7 miles past Downieville on Highway 49 right on the river . I'm just glad all of the dredgers quit mining for gold !!! Very nice area and the people in the town of Downieville are real nice people . They have a coffee shop , pizza parlor , market , gas station and a hardware store . Everything you need !!! ;)
