So I'm normally a 9-5 guy (or 8-6, depending on the workload). I work in a process development lab, pretty fun stuff. Next week we are doing an extended run we need to staff around the clock, and being the young one I drew the night shift.

So it's now 3:45 am (WELL past my bed time) trying to stay up late to get on the nightshift schedule. Anyone have any tips for night shift? Or the transition?

Yo Brian! :D
Good luck!! I never could really adjust 100%. maybe for periods of time yes. But in my case I was laboring... and partying... never mind :D

When you finally do get off and go home get some sleep.Dont shortchange your body of it's rest.

I work on the road in different states and countries. Constantly changing time zones. I agree don't skimp

I work on the road in different states and countries doing medical sales. Constantly changing time zones and flying. I agree don't skimp on the rest. I'll get a couple hours sleep on a plane, nap in a hotel, sleep a couple hours before a flight. It usually adds up to a decent amount but getting consistent, continuous rest is better.

The key for me is blacking out the room. This helps tremendously. In some hotels is impossible to do so I wear blinders. I would suggest light proofing your sleeping room. This will help you. Silence your phone, don't look at it when you wake up at night, the bright light really messes up your sleep cycle.

In time your body adapts and sleeps when you tell it to.

But you're young still! You don't need sleep :what:;)

I love nights. When I first went on it..I didn't have adjust In fact I haven't worked nights now since 2009 and I still find myself up half the night. Of course I always want to take a nap during the day.

I've been working midnights (10:15-6:45am) for about 8 years now. You never really adjust 100%, but it does get easier once you get a good routine down.
For me, I get home in the am, stay up till 11am, and then go to bed. Room is completely blacked out, and I keep either the fan, or the ac going to drown out exterior noise. I have also taken over-the-counter sleep aids pretty consistantly.
Unisom type stuff, or, Benadryl usually works (essentially the same ingredients.)
Also, for the down time at work, when I'm just bored (quiet often) I always have my kindle on me, and have read more in the past few years, than I ever have in my life.

Thanks for the tips. So far I'm not doing great at sleeping in. My body just won't sleep.

Friday I stayed up until 2:30am then slept only until 9. Saturday I stayed up until 4am and now just slept until 10. Hoping I stay up until 6am tonight and hopefully sleep until at least noon. Well see.

The fun part is its a chemistry lab and I get to work with dangerous chemicals through this too. So I can't just be awake, I need to be wide awake.

I'll may check out some sleep pills tonight if I can't sleep in better.

I'd recommend diphenhydramine (benadryl and unisom) and melatonin of you need aids at all. Both are over the counter.

I'd use prescription sleep aids as an absolute last resort. I have horror stories about my experiences with ambien.
