Im in the market for a DSLR. This will be my first DSLR and I dont know anything about them. I just know I want to either go with Canon or Nikon. Which one is the better camera? Costco is having a package deal on both cameras. This camera will be for everyday use but a lot of it will be for my fishy. I would love a Canon 40D but its out of my price range. You can also list which other camera you think its better than these. Thanks.

I got my Cannon D40 (only one lens 18-55mm) on ebay for $350 and squaretrade insurance (after market insurance) for something like $70. I love it. I was in a photo club and there was a long standing argument between the Cannon and Nikkon members. They both take great pictures and are easy to use while getting fantastic results.

Out of the two from Costco you posted, I would go with the Cannon for the extra $50 to get the lens that goes up to 300mm. For fish you will probably only use the 18-55mm, but the bigger zoom lens is something that I wich I had.

Thanks for the info..I was leaning towards the Canon because I currently own their P&S SD750. I will probably have a easier time trying to learn it vesus the Nikon.

$350 is a Steal for the Canon d40..Good find!!

i really dont think you can go wrong with either choice, nikon or canon. some people have a case of brand loyality so there will always be debates about which is better. My advise is to go to the stores and look at the camera in person. hold it in your hands and see which feels more comfortable to you to hold.

i just recently purchased my first one last month after months of debating. i went with the D80 kit (18-55 VR & 55-200 VR lens) for $799. it is an outdated model now since the D90 came out but i went with a Nikon brand instead of Canon because i like how it fit in my hands

the D60 will run you about $760 with tax and canon around $810 (since costco will charge you tax) so if you dont mind an outdated camera, i suggest you go look at the D80 also.

I also looked at the D90 but i couldnt justify paying couple hundred more for the newer D90 for what i was planning on using it for.

good luck. :D

i just got the nikon d40 and that takes amazing pictures of everything including my fish so i could only imagine what the d60 would be. I would go with the d60!

Thats way too high, what kind of lense are you talking about? The d60 with 18-55 VR lense goes for $550 most places. On ebay it can be had for under $500 shipped.

To the original poster, go to the store and try them out. Nikon vs. canon is personal preference...see how it feels in your hand. I would go d40 over the d60 as the only real difference is megapixels i believe. And unless you are blowing your shots up huge, i wouldn't worry about that.

Cool..ill look into the d80. Where did you get it at. $800 w/ 2 lense seems like a good deal.

Thanks..If the only difference is the mega pixel then I rather save myself $100 bucks. I dont really care about mega pixel. Not planning on blowing up any pics.
