I voted Canon, but I have only used a Canon DSLR and not a Nikon so that is biased. Currently only have the XTi, with the kit lens (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6) and a 50mm f/1.8. I want to get some new lenses and a separate flash soon though.
I have only used both from borrowing them from friends, but canon has more photo options imo. I think nikon has a bigger name for cameras, but with dig. slrs canon is the way to go. I am planning on getting a Canon rebel XT with 18-55mm lens from amazon shortly, if you get a nikon check it out on amazon first. They have some killer deals on the cameras.
I've used both the XTi and D50 and loved both cameras. For me, it would come down to price. In the market for an SLR myself, can anyone recommend links to get the XTi?
I like the feel of the nikon cameras a bit better. They're slightly heavier and feel better in my hand. I've also read more about canon breaking than nikon.
Either company makes good cameras, both have a good track record, and both have annoying fanboys.
i just got an xti and 50mm f/1.8 lens. its great for walking around. i know a few people with nikons and used a few and like my canon better. i wish i had money for a 40d

i've always liked nikons, first digital cam was a nikon coolpix..always been a nikon after that. if i started out with a canon..it'd probably be the same way.
i have a D40 now, wanted the D50 but the store had sold their used D50's an hour earlier. now i REALLY want the new D300..
