So what made you decide on this lens? It's not one that I'd see myself buying personally.

The reviews I've read on it don't seem to make it worth the $ unless you make a living taking photos.

Granted those are the first two I found.
i chose this because i wanted a fixed wide aperture zoom lens. my next purchase will be the 70-200 f/2.8 followed by the tokina 11-16 f/2. i'm just tired of slow lens especially in low light!!

it's expensive, but i feel its a great investment. the only bad things people say about it is about its size/weight/price. but i love how big and heavy it is; balances the camera out nicely with the battery grip. its optical quality is incredible. in the bythom link, check out its performance rating, 5 stars. this is what matters really. ken rockwell is full of it. this is the same guy that has orgasms over the 18-200mm. i bought one and was very disappointed at how soft it is at all zoom levels. he makes the 18-200 sounds like its god's gift to photographer. but if you read real reviews, theyre all pretty bad. dont get me wrong, the 18-200 is a great lens but if you want supreme image quality, it's just not there.

as for the 17-55mm, he says pretty much says the 18-55 kits lens is good enough. this is true, if you dont need a fast lens. the 18-55 kit lens is great for its dirt cheap price. but it's low light performance just isnt there. just this past weekend i shot my cousins baptism in a dark church and wished i had a faster lens.

and check out how fast the AF is. and super quiet!!

i think i have the color of an exceptionally green elf now

suhweet new lens there, but why did ya sell of ur flash trigger, with a macro a remote trigger is so very much needed, i hope u picked up a master flash unit.

I completely agree with your comment about size and weight. The cheap plastic lenses they make today I'm not a fan of.

For that reason I'm starting to get into older, "vintage" glass. That and I enjoy the hunt.
