i think i have the color of an exceptionally green elf now

suhweet new lens there, but why did ya sell of ur flash trigger, with a macro a remote trigger is so very much needed, i hope u picked up a master flash unit.
well i have no need for it anymore really. when i had my D40 my only choices for off-camera flash were the su-800, a hotshoe extension cable, or a cheap radio trigger (which i didnt want because you lose TTL info).

but now that i have the d90, it has a built-in Commander mode. it uses the onboard flash to wirelessly control my speedlights. i can choose to leave the onboard flash at TTL, or i can turn it off and still trigger my speedlight. even though it says "off", it will send a monitor preflash that sends a signal to the speedlight.

now, this preflash does NOT affect the exposure of your shot, but it can cause reflections in shiny objects or cause your subject to blink. that is where the awesome SG-31R comes in. this $10 piece of plastic blocks the preflash but still allows the signal to get to the speedlight. i still may buy a cheap ebay radio trigger for aquarium photography, because having the flash on my 3ft tall tank may not catch the flash signal clearly. i wont get TTL, but this wont matter since you do everything manually for aquarium photography.

here's the sg-31r :)

i cant man, its an addiction!!! :nilly:

I sort of agree with jcardona. It is mildly addictive. I recently bought the Nikon D5000 and within a few weeks I've added a Rocketfish tripod and the SB-600 Speedlight. I got the Rocketfish at Bestbuy for $149.99. Rocketfish makes multiple products for Bestbuy. They make quality products and are always priced reasonably. There were 18-20 user reviews for the Rocketfish tripod, on the Bestbuy.com site. Out of them, all were positive. It's one of the best tripods that I've ever seen, even better than the similarly priced Manfrotto tripod. I also got the SB-600 at pre-tax price of $219.99 + a $10, Bestbuy gift card, which brings it down to $209.99.

haha welcome to the club! ill have to look into that tripod. ive been using the Dolica proline, its a nice tripod but nothing like the high quality ones. i do want to get a nice manfrotto monopod though.

you thought about how youre gonna trigger the sb-600 for aquarium pics?

Yep, I'm probably going to have to spring for a Wireless Commander. I've been looking at Amazon and ebay for pricing on the SU-800. The Rocketfish tripod is made of heavy-duty carbon and has a nice, light, quality carrying bag. By the way, the Dolica Proline is a nice-looking tripod.

if youll only be using the speedlight off camera for aquarium photography, go with a cheap radio trigger from ebay. since you shoot everything manual anyways, TTL metering isnt gonna help.

but if you see yourself using it for other things, like portraits and whatnot, it might be worthwhile to invest in the su-800 since it keeps TTL and communicates all info between the camera and flash.

then again, if you feel you might upgrade bodies, the built-in commander mode will mean you wont need the su-800 as much :)
