nile monitor growth rate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I say its a Nile or Water monitor. It does not in no way look like a Throat. And yes, it dont matter what kind it is, it should be ALOT bigger.

well, maby ill put him in with the iguanas.they have a custome enclosure that my bro built.its pretty big,i guess.the last time he was in there, they fu**ed up his tail and thats why i took him out.

and to u z-trip,i dont need the opinion of an as*hole so STFU and go ride someone elses ass cause im just going to ignore your stupid comments from now on.so when you get old enough to get a job and pay rent to your mommy and daddy, you'll realize money dont grow on trees.right now,i dont have the money to build a new enclosure so hes gonna have to deal with what he has.im not going to get rid of him either so dont even bother spreading your opinion on that.and by the way,raw hamburger was recomended to me by the breeder that i got him from, and im sure that he knows alot more about them than you do

Umm...why not get him his own enclosure as any responsible nile monitor owner would? Iguanas and monitors should NOT be kept together at all. And before you say so, yes, I've seen some zoos keep them together, too. GUess what...I've also seen people drive without their seatbelts, ride motorcycles without helmets, and pet the snout of a great white shark. See where I'm going with this?

Sounds to me like when you got this lizard, you didn't think it through to its entirety. And BTW, you never said what kind of lighting you have on him, which migt be a critical factor as to why he is so small.

Bottom line: make sure you do have correct lighting, and get him a bigger cage of his own....and never feed him hamburger of any kid again. Try canned monitor food or raw eggs instead.

Why do I even try to help out when this happens? I know the people didnt like me for the turtle ordeal, but the advice I give is close to the best you can get. Im trying to help the animal involved here. I dont care about you at all. Because you can take proper care of something, you are going to keep it wth you and make it suffer? That is not right. I take care of what I keep, if I cant take care of it, I get rid of it, have somone care for it during the time im getting money or simply sell the animal. I gave you suggestions about what you set up should look like. SO:chillpill:

Just FYI, a 3-4 year old water or nile should be pushing the 5' mark at LEAST, waters are easily at 6' by then.

Yeah, I think we've established that he should be larger. HOwever, we've yet to hear from bestCali, especially regarding his lighting and whatnot. So we've yet to determine why the lizard in question is so small.

Unless of course, the pic he posted is a couple years old, in which case, he should've said so.

The problem is this.... feeding it weekly is not going to cut it. Monitors are not snakes. They need to be fed everyday when young and every 2-3 days as adults. The other issue is that the monitor is probably not being taken care of very well in terms of husbandry.....the equation is simple. Heat um and feed um....... that is keep the temps high and they will grew like seaweed ....there is no way a Nile monitor which can reach lengths of 7 feet should be that small at 4-5 yrs of age.

just to add on .....if you cant afford to feed him do not torture him put him up for sale to someone who will be alot more responsible than you are and that wil provide him adequate care. Another impulse buy ...... equals another dead monitor. As if 10,000 of them being brought in each year isnt enough !!!!! keep feeding the flame kid.... and FYI there are not breeders....of varanus niloticus just farmers and importers....get it straight!
