savanna monitors are usually what people start with, they are much more tame and stay a bit smaller. Even with these guys though, you need to do your research...

So if i was to get a smaller monitor what would you choose?

Agree with snakeguy re: savs; my first monitor was a sav and he was fantastic. For the really small species ackies get a lot of recommendations, but I've never kept them personally. If you want something bigger argus are a good choice, you'll pay more up front than for a sav but argus are all CB so you avoid some of the issues associated with the WC savs.

Yeah i Savanna would be a good starter if you want to work your way up to a bigger monitors. A Argus is an amazing monitor and i think are one of the most unique monitors out there. Also a Timor would be a good starter and are very sharp looking little guys, I have never had one personal but sure would like to one day. Tree monitors are also a smaller monitor but have a lot of requirements with humidity and such but come in some amazing colors. You will want to do a lot of research on any of them tho cause there still is ton of requirements even for the small guys. I think you will be very happy with whatever monitor you go with as there are a blast to take care of.

+1 on the Argentine Black and White Tegu. Very cool, and personable too. No one has mentioned the Black Throat monitors, I think they would be easier to work with but also get huge. If your set on a monitor I say go with an Argus. They have that big monitor look but don't get as big. I've heard that timors are usually pretty fiesty.
