Are these guys as bad as their reps? Just got a 6'' babys (SV length) How bad would his bite be?

Yore in for a big surprise. Hope to Cheese Wiz that he's captive bred. It being captive bred should help a little with the attitude, but he's most likely just going to be an ass.

yes they are that bad...........Good luck on "taming"....hahaha!!!!

mine was satanic and was a picky feeder.........would only reccomend for the advanced keeper!!!!

bite is not too bad as juv. but the scratching is horrible at any age and then when big the bite gets very interesting.....................G/l.....

not trying to discourage, just be prepared, get some arm length gloves for starters.:)

Yeah....Is it POSSIBLE to get them tame? He has no problem with me even picking him up. He's just a little hyper / squirmy.:)
HOPEFULLY that won't change....

cool bro, good luck with it:) ............I still suggest gloves....welding ones perhaps, as the scratch can be pretty bad when it decides to squirm a little too much!!

Seeing as how you got him at a young age theres hope in taming him. I had one for a number of years that was a rescue and he eventually learned to accept me as his keeper but I wouldn't call him tame. He would tolerate being held as long as he wasn't restrained and never attempted to bite. I have seen dog tame niles before though so there is hope. Most lizards only have a 48 to 72 hour memory span so daily interaction is required in order to tame him. I hope you're prepared to house this guy because he will be well over 5 feet within a years time. Mine grew from 14 inches snout to tail length to 65 inches snout to tail length in 15 months. They grow amazingly fast if given the right environment. Don't let this discourage you though, you can have a great pet nile just stick with it and work with him daily. Keep us posted and try to get some pics up!

usually an extra bedroom / room properly heated and cordonned off and of course "nile proofed" will be your best bet for an adult..........as stated above they can grow as large as an american ali!!:)

I don't want to sound rude here so please don't take this as an attack I just want to clear the air, they most definitely cannot grow as large as an American Alligator. Though sometimes it seems they are that big.:D The Amer. Ally will reach lengths over 13 feet and weigh in excess of 800 lbs. The Nile Monitor will rarely exceed 25 lbs. and usually top out at about 6 feet or so. The biggest I've seen (and I've seen hundreds) was 78 inches and weighed 27 lbs and at the time he was 14 years old.

Wow. I'd better start on the outdoor heated pen. I wasn't expecting THAT kind of growth..:D
