I kinda agree with Elevate on this one. While we do try to help people out, I for one do not like advocating the idea that impulse purchases are okay. We just want to make sure the person knows how ill-advised that line of thinking is. I don't care, but buying an animal just because it looks cool and/or was a really good price is one of the stupidest things anyone can do, especially if they have no prior knowledge of it. The sad truth of it is simply that people just don't think anymore before taking out their wallets.
While I agree with you I think that these types of people are easier to explain this concept to when you try to help along with the criticism for impulse buying. Answer a few questions of theirs and then ask why they bought the animal on impulse instead of just berating.

True. While I can't speak for Elevate, I usually try to answer their questions first before I start questioning their motives. In this particular thread, there wasn't really any advice I could give in Niles that hasn't already been said.

Agreed, I think his main questions had been answered and I commend the original poster for being open to suggestions and hopefully not offended by my comments, as they were not meant to do so.

What I am trying to convey is this - do your research BEFORE making the decision to purchase the animal! That's great that this guy at least sounds willing to do what it takes to keep his nile monitor properly, but I don't think that attitude is representative of most keepers who are buying them (remember large_cichlids?).

Unfortunately, whatever happened to that guy? Thanks for not taking my posts out of context and keeping this nice and civil guys!!:)

I've seen him make a few posts in the other fish forums...more of the same attitude with fish as he had with his reptiles. It was interesting/sad to see week after week a new animal in the same 55 gal tank...I couldn't keep up.

ask large cichlid about that bit on the niles...he can tell you:nilly:

I thought his sister could tell you about that better than he could.
blah...

You bought a nile monitor w/o researching how large they get?

Also, how are you 99% sure that it is captive bred? Nile, Savannah, and Water Monitors are some of the most heavily imported animals and because of that, there is not a huge captive breeding effort going on.

In any event, it sounds like you've got a lot of research to do, based on the questions you've asked. That's why you're here, right? ;) I guess what I'm saying is I like to see people do research BEFORE they have the animal in their possession.

Here's an adult nile, have fun with your new "pet":

good luck man
:D

Good luck :D For baby monitors I read a mainly insect diet was better than a rodent one, switching to a more exclusive rodent diet as they near maturity. Am I wrong?
