Don'tThose things have the potential to reach 6-8' and 300-500+ pounds? although IIRC when River monsters did the show on them they said the average size caught now days is closer to 180 pounds. Still a huge powerful fish. Where do you intend to keep it when it gets larger and what will you feed it?

I think there's 1 species that can get to 1000lbs+

im a keeper of nile perch i have 1 at around the 18"mark sold as lates niloticus and im growing 2 smaller ones that are around 6" that where sold as sp.im wondering what you mean about royal? do you mean the pattern on the body which changes depending on there moods and loose as they grow or are you taking about a differant sub species? i got a few books on nile perch but havnt come across royal unless its a common name for one of the following?
l. angustifrons-lake tanganyika region
l. japonicus-easy to identify japan
l.longispinus- lake rudolf region
l.macrophthalmus lake victoria apparently not a pure niloticus
l.mariae big eye lates
l.microlepis-commn name fork tail
l.stopperii-common name sleek lates
as far as im aware {very limited info on the net and inbooks} theres very little difference in the majority of them except the japonicus other than slight regional variations in juvenille patterns.
Sir. My friend told me that "royal" nile perches won't lose their patterns when they're in their adult stage. While common ones do lose theirs and look like barramundi. I'm just wondering if mine are "Royal" or not

Im not sure thats true ive seen 3 foot nile perch still occasionally show the bold camouflaged look it all depends on its mood but does it less and less as they mature even the japs loose it as they age.mine can look like two completely different fish within munutes and prefer the plain look which dosent resemble a barramundi. nile perch have a purple sheen similiar to wat I think a male jag gets. There are rumours theres even hybrids in the wild tho according to a book ive read.do you know where they were sourced from?

I don't really know sir :(. There's a lfs near my house and they have all kind of exotic fish. So I asked the owner if he can get those nile perch for me. And he said yeah, he went to LA and pick them up for me :D.

Well there 100 percent nile perch which is great I dont think royal is any differant just a name to discribe its camouflage pattern. and you will soon learn they change there appearance regularly.they should grow to 30 inch in a large aquarium and theres 2 males to every female in the wild.females grow larger.good look with them have u got them pellet trained
