Nile Perch

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you could support them for 5-10 years but they live much longer I think you could probably find some place for them eventually. Realistically a Arapima could reach almost 12 ft in length so that pool might be a little small. But for the first 5-20 years you should be ok, I hear they slow at the 6 ft mark.

"The often cited maximum length of 4.5 m (14.8 ft)"

I'm with kamikaze on this one.. if they get to live their theoretical lifespan they would be extremely hard to house.. I'd personally give it away or worst case scenario euthanize it at like 30" or something.. just not worth a arapaimag-build for one fish that may die any day..

I think you'd need at least a 7000 gallon to make it happy.

Thanks for the info.. since you seem to be interested in this topic, do you think 5000 gallons would suffice for a fully grown nile perch?

Double to quadruple those specs and you should be able to house 1-3, but These things realistically are far to large and specialized to house in home aquariums. even zoos don't keep them. Good luck if you do.

Also looking for cancer if used wrongs drugs to treat the fish you eventually eat.

I mean who treats their fish???  you make a point but one I wouldn't get to bent out of shape about as long as you are aware and don't live in cali (labels always say causes cancer only in the state of california) :nilly:

seriously though I mean in a tank that size you can't even treat the fish legitimately beyond medicated food. Any larger fish I've ever had were at best treated once as incoming fish and not at all for the rest of their time till they expired.

I'm just saying if I had plans to build a pond the size the op is talking about I'd go ahead and get the fish, deal with em when they are to big if I was afraid to eat em at worst they'd be fish food for the next couple years ya know. I've never done this to a fish but I wouldn't just mistreat the fish by stunting them I'd rather eat/feed them to someone or re-home them. Eating aquarium fish is akin to farming IMHO. If it is important enough to you do it, we have enough people trying to raise oscars in 55 gallon tanks on here you'd be alright in my book just be aware of future needs and plan accordingly. Don't go in with illusions of an arapima being alright for life in that pond. Seriously there are lots of beloved tanks on here with arapimas and the fish is only 3 ft. long. You are already off to a good start with those dims IMHO just don't forget what you are really dealing with and be caught off guard.
