Nimbochromis venustus in a 55g?

The LFS guy has taken care of this guy for 3 years, and he seems to be generally an aggressive fish... even alone in a tank he has an air of aggression around him :D

I think I'm going to put him on hold so I can pick him up when I get my 90g... I'm pumped for my first cichlid :headbang2

I found a cichlid board and posted my question about an N. venustus in a 55g.

Someone mentioned that African Lake cichlids, such as the venustus, don't do well alone, and can be skittish... while Central Americans are good alone.

Is there merit to this? My heart is set on this venustus, but I wanna be 100% sure this'll be a good environment for the fish. Would more cover help?
 
It shouldn't be bad to keep it alone, and if it is skittish, maybe add some dithers...there are plenty of neotropicals that are skittish too, like a lot dempseys
 
How big are the goldfish that they need a 90?
Maybe they would like the 55 instead....
 
my male venustus is alone in a 90 gallon and he loves it! i think it depends on the temperment of the fish.. my venustus by nature is really aggressive and mean to any other living critter, so thats why he is alone, fat and happy.

Well there are 7 goldfish, so they should get a minimum of 10-20g per fish... so the 90g is going to be alright for them as a permanent home. The goldfish are more like pets to me, so the upgrade is for them first.

The extra 55g will either be sold or gather dust...yah right I can't stand to see an empty aquarium. But I have a tropical community tank already and they aren't my thing, so having the venustus would be awesome.

Either that or a Bichir, but like I said, I love this fish!!

This venustus is also very aggressive and has killed a mate and most fish that have been placed with him... so I think he would do best alone.
 
i know they say they can tend to be aggresive towards tankmates mine big guy about 9-10 is more like the police of my tank i once had a red zebra that decided to play bully and he would have none of it and my ven. would only retaliate when the red was picking on someone else its prolly the coolest thing i have ever seen. As i have said before they are my favorites.
