Nipped Fins

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That won't grow back. Hard spines don't grow back. Splits in the soft tissue will, like in the caudal and pectoral fins and splits in the soft parts of the dorsal.

Here's my old male that I rescued from an LFS I worked at. This is a year or so after I saved him.

you don't need to change the temp the JDs fins are nipped pretty low it most likely won't grow back all the way the jag if its not to bad will heal very fast and if its small it will heal faster just add a little salt and thats it if the jag just has a few splits or chunks missing then it should heal in a week or two if its like you JD then it will take much longer if the JD was very small like 1''-2'' then it could heal that wound but once they get bigger and develop spines it most likely won't heal fully sorry to say

if its at that far from the bottom of the finnage...give it atleast 3-5 weeks and i should have some healing done. But if your heals fast enough it should heal around 2-3 weeks tops since its still small and young

I got a very ripped up (and dropped) Chocolate Cichlid, had fairly bad fin damage, 1cm missing here, 5mm missing there, all over his dorsal, caudal, and anal fins.

Was fully healed within about 6 days in Sub 10ppm Nitrate water, no medication. Unfortunately I lost the image of him on day 1 looking very sad and sorry for himself, but here's him 5 days later. He's growing like a monster at the moment!

The black marks are the sections of fin that were missing. That was him, February 4th. And to go off topic..

Here's "Fathead" yesterday, March 7. Terrible photo though.

Actually, there's that Melafix stuff that's made out of a blend of organic oils that will supposedly keep infections at bay while fish are healing fins. I haven't used it before, and I'm not sure if it's good for saltwater and freshwater, so please look that up first.

(Or if someone is more experienced with this stuff? Apparently, it's pretty popular.)

I've used melafix and works great. Like everyone else said, if its not too deep it should grow back. Give it time and clean water + melafix.
