Nirates are not removed by filters. Only water changes can take care of that.
Yes its true you can have a filter to remove nitrate. Those filters use anaerobic bacteria to consume nitrate. There are a few types, some you need a carbon source to help "feed" the bacteria, others that are just a media type that take care of it for you ( not sure how that works in fresh water) and still just plain old really porous filter media in a dark low oxygen environment. I have used all three in various systems saltwater seems pretty easy to cultivate the needed anaerobic bacteria where fresh water not so much. There is in fact a type of filter that are supposed to remove nitrate. Its called an anoxic filter. Im not sure how it works but it is frequently used in the koi hobby. I have a friend who built a big anoxicfilter for his 10000L plywoodtank. But it is something i have to read up on more before i can be sure it works.
You keep saying high nitrates but only 1 account of what that is to you. Is 30ppm high to you in a 2 week span? Thats not high my friend. Do weekly waterchanges clean your filters more often and feed your fish. If its at 30 weekly you are perfectly fine. High nitrate is 80+. I dont like seeing anything over 40 and dont in my system and id be happier if it were more like 20 tbh but 30 isnt high.so I tried not using the canister since i know after awhile it will become nitrate factory so I just use 2 hob and I still get high nitrate. im feeding only once a week because I want to see is it I keep feeding daily to make it so high but even if I feed it once a week with just a 1/4 piece of talipa it still the same. ima test the water this weekend and change the water to see whats the reading.

A few of us dabbled with nitrate filters. Very touchy and a high maintenance project. I was able to get 2 or 3 weeks if nitrate reduction. Fiddling with it was fun for a while but in the end wc's were less time consuming
Good luck with it. Theres a few older threads that might help you avoid some mistakes I/we made. I can try and dig them up.I plan on building an anoxic filter of an sipaxtank soon just to try it out. Will filter a 1600L tank with 800L anoxic filter 180L moving bed sump and three diy showerfilters.
