Nitrate absorbing floating plants

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thats awesome will let you know.

Where did you get them ?

Can that be left floating ?

So maybe some combo of watercress , water lettuce, and umbrella sedge would be cool
It will float but eventually it will want to sprawl out of sump and tends to seek out shady spots. I would just remove the runners and feed to cichlids.or other plant eaters.

Cool so what combo would you go with. Any noticeable difference in nitratre levels ?
Also out of the 3 or 4 i mentioned do they all reproduce quickly or should i buy larger quantities

Yes but I crank alot of lighting and natural light. Once you actually start seeing fast growth, you'll start noticing nitrate reduction. I would go with umbrella sedge and either of the floaters. You could keep the floaters in a floating basket or strainer to easy cleanup. If you wanted to go the ornamental route there are other plants you can try but the sedge is a work horse.

All the plants, if they arent getting good light or nutrients they can start breaking up but if healthy not bad and well worth it, especially you can build a pen like you described. Start off with a small amount and let it grow in.

I use those home depot clip lights with led bulbs. Got a higher end bulb shining on my ac110 with emersed plants (pothos and mint, my bacopa floated back in the tank lol). It's a philips daylight spectrum floodlight with a reflector built in. Think I paid 15 for it and 7 for the lamp haha. I have the same lamp and a 2 dollar soft white led on my rescued goldfish tank and it keeps hornwort alive long enough to be nibbled. I also have a 15 watt floodlight I got on amazon for 13 bucks on my convict tank which seems to be good for pothos and hornwort. That one runs extremely hot though after like an hour so I probably need to rig up a pc fan for it. I also had to buy a cord and switch for it since I didnt read the description, pain in the ass since I never mess with electronics other than pcs haha. Get one with a plug to save the hassle if you go that direction.

Thx im thinking if i use those low wattage leds wife wont be able to raise her eyebrows lol

The red blue, or the purple full spectrum would work. The white leds, have non photosynthesis spectrums.

The 2700k CFL of 26 watts, is comparable to 10 watts of Led lighting in the 460 nm to 660nn spectrums.
