Nitrate bloom

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm not sure about the nitrate issue, but Houston water is messed up real bad right now because of all the rain. I did a test on my tap water and the nitrite levels were ridiculous. I would be careful when doing water changes right now. I was in Fish Ranch II today and they said that they had to suspend all water changes until things got better. Kind of unusual I guess, but the problem is here and something we have too deal with. Unless you have a huge tank, you might consider buying a bottled source or something. Hope this helps.

This is one of the main reasons we filter our own RO/DI water for our tanks.

Thats funny I was planning on going to Fish Ranch and see if I can get something for my tank. anyways that explains it all because 3 of my friends had complain about their tanks acting up too, but now it makes sense that it would be the rain. I m thinking about buying those filters that I can plug in to the waterwhose, mean while I just hope that my JD The oldest fish in my tank (3 and a half yrs) wont pass way. He looks super stress (lost major coloration on the stomag area and breathing very hard):(

you could add a lil cap of prime to the tank that might help..

Go to your fish store and have them squeeze some sponges into a bucket filled with filter floss. Then add that to your filters as a little BB booster to help with the increase toxin levels. It might help. Anything is better than dumping a ton of chemicals into your water.

How's it going? I did a test on my Houston tap today and found some ammonia in it (about 1.0), but no nitrite. I think you would be ok doing a water change now if we have similar sources. I wouldn't be surprised though to see another nitrite spike in the Houston tap soon as the reservoirs aren't immune to the nitrogen cycle either. Hope the JD is holding strong.

I just woke up and the JD is holding strong( still breathing funny and with bad color) I added Cycle to the tank last time but to be honest I dont see any change. I m going to do a water change this sunday. And no I havent tested Houston water yet again. pmtuneman13 I will take your advice and try to take some new pics too so yall know what I m talking about.

That wouldn't do anything for the nitrate levels.

Could you tell him what would work? That's a pretty crappy scenario those guys are in. I have used this technique when establishing a new tank several times and my tanks cycled much faster.
