Nitrate filters/denitrators

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The (very few) commercial de-nitrators I've seen people post about have either been drastically less effective than the DIY version or insanely expensive. There's plenty of info here: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=180385 I cant find the link, but some Scandinavian company has an effective freshwater protein skimmer. Its aimed at large-scale Koi ponds, but they may have a smaller one. Do some searching homie.

Can you please provide a link? I have seen no evidence of that.

No. Go search:grinno:.

TODDO- I usually prefer buying a commercial product over DIY too. If I remember correctly, the issue with the coil de-nitrator was that it was near impossible to clean out the built up algae in the coil. It builds quickly & restricts the flow to almost nothing, so you have to find a way to clean it all the time. I really like the FW protein skimmer idea, but I couldnt find one small enough for aquarium use. My buddy uses some kind of chemical denitrator on his SW tank, but I dont know much about it. Java Ferns & Amazon Sword plants work well for me, but not that well.

There are a bunch of DIY freshwater protein skimmers (AKA foam fractionators) on khoiphen.com. I don't know if they're actually useful as a nitrate remover.

I still say photosynthetics are the way to go.
