Nitrate help ASAP

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Unless you are on a private well in a rural area, your tap water nitrates should be under 10ppm. The MCL for all US public water suppliers is 10ppm, and no legitimate public water supplier would risk going over the MCL, unless they have an ideology like Flint.
Because you have not responded with your water change schedule, I will add mine to the fray. For me to maintain a nitrate level between a 2 and 5ppm, I found I needed to change about 30% of my tanks water every other day

Not exactly.

This 10ppm limit is for nitrogen in nitrates, and equals 44ppm nitrate.

Southjersey, did you write nitrates in the OP when you meant nitrites? You have another thread saying nitrites are too high in your 220, and you also just bought a 220-gallon 2 months ago.

If it's nitrites, it's likely because the tank isn't cycled.

If it's nitrates, it's almost certainly something that others have already said:

1) test is not accurate, or
2) WC are too small and too infrequent, or
3) fish are being over fed.

seems to me is more than likes a combo of 2 and 3. esp 2, nitrates dictaste, err dictate what your water change schedule and how much should be. how much or how little you feed can tweek this some, but nothing going to replace doing the proper water changes at the needed time in the needed quantity to keep nitrate creep in check. IMHO.

How can they be in a plywood tank thats 8x8x3 when you just had a thread not even two weeks ago about plans for a 8x7x3.....?

I say pics?.....
Sorry to mess up the Nitrate thread. I just figured out acrylic tank is cheaper than plywood tank. I talk to my client, who own a construction company, for some acrylic sheets. $500 for 96" X 48" X 1" sheet. I got 6 sheets for $3000 free cut. Weld 2 sheets to make 8' X 8' bottom panels. Front, back panels are 96" X 36". Side panels are 94" X 36". The rest for brace. Filtration is put-in-top 180 gallons glass tank. Tank was built in 4 hours by 1 windows constructor and 1 nails tech (me). The basement is in progress, will post pics after everything done.
By the way, if you are live in Bloomfield, MI please come to my nails salon. M to T for the pedicure manicure $45 (coupon) $52 (reg)
