So, when growing out juvenile discus, what kind of nitrate levels are optimal for them to do well?

I know that I will probably get some, "as low as possible" comments or "0" comments but I am looking for some numbers to go by so that when I get some I can get a good system going to keep them healthy and grow them out large and colorful. What kind of nitrate levels do you start to see them become unhealthy and/or see their growth stunted?

Thank you all for your help! I want to find this stuff out BEFORE I get them rather than find out the hard way.

I've been through that entire video several times. It was an extremely good presentation. I just want to get some more details so that I can be as prepared as possible. This is probably still a few months away but it doesn't hurt to gather as much info as possible beforehand.

Thanks for the link though.
if you're worried about nitrates put tons of pothos plants in your sump or tank. It will decrease it dramatically but is not a substitute for water changes.

People with discus do 90 percent water changes a day.... I don't get that but yeah

90% a day is not needed for water change...unless that's what you want to do. You can do a minimal water change of 25% every other day and your discus will be just fine. Of course, it will also depend on how many you have in a tank, size of the tank, filtration system, etc. other may do it differently...but this is what I do with my Discus tank.

Don't start with small discus if you don't want to do frequent water changes. Spend the extra money and get something in the 4 - 4.5" range that is less likely to stunt out. Don't overstock your tank and feed them 2 - 3 times a day.

From the strains i've seen recently, they are much improved in hardiness and adaptability. My friend breeds them, and sometimes the lackadaisical approach he has; surprises me. All fish do well though.

I think if it was me, i'd likely do at least a 33% per week, maybe 50% max, but I haven't kept them personally, so that could be rubbish.
