So, my filters are bedded in now (around 5 weeks old). I have just tested my water and I am getting a Nitrate figure of around 80ppm. Ammonia is 0, as is Nitrite... PH is 7.8.

Is this normal?? I currently dont have any algae blooms or any other visible problems.

with the info given, it sounds as if your tank is cycled. Those are normal tank parameters, to lower your nitrate levels you will have to do water changes. Depending on type fish nitrates should be kept at 20 to 30ppm.

Are there fish in it? After it finishes cycling all the ammonia and nitrite is being converted into nitrate, so you need to start doing water changes and add fish if you haven't already.

Yeah, fish are in. Tests were done day before my water change....which will be done this afternoon....!! Glad to hear this is normal, thanks.

nitrates mean your filters are working

the only sure fast way to remove the nitrates are with 25% water changes

80ppm is not that bad

It's not too bad, but it is time to do a water change.
