I always keep sponges until they fall apart, no reason to discard sponges, they are great mechanical filtration, and also hold beneficial bacteria as long as you don't kill them with chlorine, just squeeze out the gunk into old tank water change water, if the water gets too turbid, toss it and take more old water from the tank.
I always figure any excuse to get rid of old water. You can also siphon old water from the tank over the sponge to help rinse more rapidly, also works well over the biomedia to remove gunk.
I'm a bit anal about water conservation, so I like to get as many uses from old tank water as possible before it ends up in the garden.
When adding sand I always rinse in old tank water , and replace the old with tap to the tank.
also, even when old sponges get to tattered to filter, I'll often put them in mesh bags, and let them float in sumps, where they can be used for any new tanks, so cycling isn't needed.
