I bought this nitrate reactor a year ago and never worked well for me. I think it is because I had poor pre filter and dirt and debris got caught all in it. I really want to get it up and running so I cleaned it all out and decided to give it another try. I just ordered a ton of pond matrix for my sump and was curious if I could use that. It previously used small plastic balls (polyhydroxyalkanoates media) but i feel matrix might actually work better. The chambers will provide a good space for anaerobic bacteria. Also, would I have to use the inserts to put the media in or could I just dump the media straight in the canister that screws into the reactor. Not sure if I would get good flow throughout the whole media. I attached a picture when it was filled with debris and wasn’t working properly. Should help with clearing any confusion. Thanks guys!

I think the filter material contains the carbon source for de-nitrification and matrix will not do that.

I never used it but it seems from what I read, besides the pre filters, flow rate is very important. One accidental exposure to oxygen rich environment and its game over and you have to start all over again.

Yeah I agree on the oxygenated water. The water it picks up is from a trickle wet/dry which means that water has got to be packed with oxygen. Does that mean it would never work? The pump it came with is a rio 1700 and pumps around 400gph

the thing is the filter not be in line with your main filter...the water flow will be too fast. You need a separate line where you can adjust your water flow to very slow...

Haha im the same way i have a ton of pothos hanging in my tank. Iv been on google for hours just not sure about the matrix going in there...i get exhausted as well ha

Anyone have experience using the bio pellets in a freshwater setup to lower nitrates? I see freshwater tanks use them a lot but curious if they would work in freshwater. I could regulate the flow through the reactor with a ball valve to get an ideal flow.
