I think nitrate reduction in addition to water changes is a great idea. I use "salt water" mangroves. My nitrates went from 40 to 20 on water change day from adding a few sprouts. I don't do water changes less often, the water is just that much cleaner. That can't be bad.

With that said, I don't have any experience with the sulfur based nitrate reducers. I prefer plants as they are more natural. But I'm still curious to hear what others have to say about them.

i wouldnt waste the money on it lol.. im a tightwad. id rather do the waterchanges. ive heard they dont work well-they lose power/strength and then your nitrates spike high-and thats bad juju..

Mangroves are $6 each at my local reefer shop. They don't wear out and only work better as time goes on. They require literally ZERO care. Like I said before, a nitrate reducer in addition to water changes is a good thing.

ive heard of ppl using mangroves and wondered if it was worth it.. so they really do help, eh? thats cool

I use mangroves also. I just put them in my corner overflows loose. They get light from the normal room lighting and like terd, I have gone from around 30ppm to around 10 ppm at water change time. Absolutely no maintainence to them and I got like 10 for 10 bucks on ebay.
