Nitrate reduction from a cannister filter

The problem with the canister is you aren't getting circulation really of any kind. You are filling it and emptying it.

A properly designed nitrate reducer has a circulation pump constantly moving the water pushing it through the media over and over again for multiple passes. What is slowed is the outflow an inflow.

Just having stagnant water I don't think is going to work very effectively.

I've been thinking about adding ozone to my fresh tanks and seeing how that will effect things.
