A water change that big is most likely to kill all those small fish (ph shock)... I guess Dr. Wade only knows about catching monster fish and nothing else...lol

I use nitrazorb in my canister filters and it does a great job. You can recharge it too.
 
Like others have said, Pothos plants will work very well to reduce nitrates. I put mine in a AC 110 HOB filter. I have the filter half full of media and have the plant sticking out of the top. The plant will eat up a lot of the nitrates. That and more frequent/bigger water changes are your best bet.
