nitrates high. before and after

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The after WC on the left looks to be lighter than before WC and from tap.

probably the water conditioner because your right.. after WC is slightly lighter than out of tap .

At my old house I had the same problem, I used to put tap water into a old tank and turned it into a giant algea scrubber then pump it into the main tank on water change day then refill it for the week. Worked well with a noticeable drop in nitrates as long as you have the room.

don't know what an algae scrubber is but I will look it up. I have an old 85g tank in the garage gathering dust.

Have you looked at reverse osmosis water filters like the TMC V2 Pure? They're small units made for aquarium use which put out 50-100 gallons per day. You would use a separate tank to store the water needed for water changes and to build the water up.

so a quick little update. there was a Reverse osmosis system in the house when I moved in, it was leaking water so I shut down the system assuming it was trash.

I got up off my lazy add this weekend and started checking it out and found the issue causing the leak. A backup water drain for the waste water side of the system stuck open, I just bypassed it for now and turned on the supply water .

so far the system is workikg. now I need to invest in water storage to accumulate the roughly 150gallons of water I use on WC. also need to start pricing out replacement filters as I have no idea how long it's been since last service. saved myself $175ish on a new system vs $50ish for new filters replacements.

here is the water sample tested for nitrates. both vials tested at the same exact time
left is tank water ~80% WC yesterday. ~20-30ppm
right is the RO water 5ppm

U could look into a whole home nitrate removal system. I put one on my house

I got a quick qoute on a whole house water softener and a r.o. for the kitchen. it was around 4 with install.

didn't think about a r.o. system for the house.. how much did you pay for your ,assuming you have one, if you don't mind me asking

I didnt go with r/o. Its a salt based nitrate removal system i think its called ionized something can remember and a water softener. Cost was less than 2k

Take some water into your lfs to have them test it. I use that same kit and got the same colors right out of my r/o system and the tank about a month ago. Fish seemed fine and all other tests were perfect but my nitrates were 100+ every test. My kit was not expired but was giving way off readings. The lfs test showed zero though.

I read that the nitrate kit will crystallize in the bottle so it needs to be knocked on the table so you might try that too.

I use my r/o system only for my fish primarily because of the increased cost in water bills. The waste water from the r/o is like 4-5 gallons of waste per good gallon so your bill will go up quite a bit depending on how much water you use. A whole house system would be a ton of waste water and not worth it imo.
