Nitrates through the roof.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My dream tank is 1500G FW, in the wall w/ a 500G sump/ fuge in the basement. The tank would divide my Living room from my dining room. When I make this happen, I'll get my Pacu pair. And build a School of Oscars. Your tank makes me want mine even more!!!!!

Ok I dont know if anyone else is following this but this is what I did. I put the Pacu on Craigs List and had someone local who had a real big tank take it. No charge. I removed the undergravel filter. Wow! The water was black. Changed alot of water and my nitrates are down to 40 or so. This is down from 200+! I now have my Oscar and a small Pleco in my 55. Gonna work my way up to a lager tank but for now I seem to have things under control. This is a good lesson to check up on what you plan on adding to your tank. Thanks for all the info! Im glad I found this site!

Lol, I told you a whole cloud of detritus would arise from underneath your undergravel filter(s)...I use to use them not too long ago...finally removed mine about 4 months ago...got tired of the water staying a brown color even after I vacuumed the whole substrate...they're worthless

Good to know all is going well and you found your pacu a new home :D

Just a update. Water is doing great! Doing 50% water changes twice a week. Only takes about a half hour so it hasnt been that bad. Just the Oscar and small placo in the tank. Thanks for all the feedback

glad to see things are going good for you. i think everyone here would agree on how important those water changes are.

nitrate absorbers only absorb so much, then start leaching said absorbed nitrate back into the tank. don't bother with it. it's a money grab and not worth the effort.

if you can't keep plants in the tank, try a pothos or something sitting on top of it, with the roots in the water. if you want the roots away from the fish, use a fish separation hang on box to keep the pothos in, just make sure there are holes for water flow.

best bet is keeping up on your water changes like the rest have stated

A simple fix would be to get a cheap HOB filter, toss out the floss, modify the lid so you can stick the pothos roots in the job while having the plant itself run up the wall behind the tank.

Thats what I did for awhile, but Pothos roots trap so much dirt and waste it blocks the water flow. Just a pain to clean it out every few weeks. I think just sticking the roots in the water works the best IMO.
