nitrates vs stingrays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
nitrates aren't good in high volumes for any fish. rays are just much more sensitive to them. this is why we do water changes or run drip systems...

Who said nitrates wont harm fish?

Nitrates are harmless at low concentrations. Once they start getting up into the 100's of ppm, then they start to become toxic to fish. Anything under 100ppm is probably acceptable, although not desirable. Anything below 20ppm is great, and anything below that is perfect (as in no detectable nitrate).

I have had discussions with someone who had fish breeding in a tank with over 200ppm of nitrates, so obviously the tolerance level is high for at least some species.

With rays I would be more careful, regardless of how tolerant they actually are to nitrates. I would want to keep the nitrates below 20ppm period, undetectable if possible.

What's the best way to keep nitrates low? I know how to keep ammonia and nitrite low but I usually get nitrate. The guy at the Lfs always told me that nitrate can't harm fish but I guess he was wrong.

I know that some ray farmers breed leos in water with a nitrate ppm of 200+.

Rays are very hardy fish. A lot of people still dont understand that.

yuppers.... now in all reality you dont want them that high but they can handle some high numbers

I agree with Nic. If you're not doing anything, change water. I change water at every opportunity, it can't hurt. Keep the nitrates low and the pH stable.
