Background: 4 weeks ago i set up a 60gal with a new canister that i had let run on my 29gal for 2 months before i set up the 60gal. I only used pads in the canister while i seaded the canister. About two weeks ago i added two full trays of ceramic rings to the canister.

Saturday i tested my water and the amonnia and nitrites were out of control. Amonnia 2.5, No2 5, No3 80. Fish all looked and acted fine. I did a water change saturday and monday. Tested the water yesterday and amonnia was 0, No3 40, No2 STILL 5.

I dont know if its related but my tank temp has climbed to 83.7 and stayed their for almost 3 days. Heater is unplugged.

Someone told me i had a bacteria bloom. That i added too many cramic rings to quick.

Woke up this morning and my Hijuita Gar was laying on the bottem. So sad now. It was a good size. 7 1/2 in.

I have another gar, a 5" ornate, and a 4" pleco that i would love to keep. I really dont want to lose the rest.

Any ideas on what to do? Should i just wait untill the tank cycles? Can i speed up the process?

ammo-lock and large water changes. with a gradual reducing of changes when the numbers come back in line to allow the bacteria to multiply.

Ceramic rings don't affect bb as a matter a fact the ceramic rings provide a home for the bb as it multiplies. Are you using dechlor? With hot tank temps u needs a bubbler for oxygen. So sorry for your loss but Atleast you learned how important water parameters really are...

Still not sure why the nitrites are so high. They are now high in the 60gal and the 187gal. I changed the water on both tanks monday.

But i think i know why the deaths. I was using aquanova pluse to declorinate my tap water for the water changes. This is my first time using it. I did rough measurments when dosing. I think i put too much in. I didnt read on the back that it removes oxegen from the water for 24 hours, until today. My air stones sliped to the top of the tank when i was doing the WC. So the air stones wernt in the water.

No air pumped in + overdose of aquanova pluse + tank temp around 83 = dead aro, filament barb, and Hijutia gar.

3 bichirs and a leaf fish survived. The flag tail was gulping air at the surface when i first saw the tank. Scooped him out and put him in my 29gal with a single 4" dat. I was just going to wait a night until the flagtail could get it energy back for the big tank. But woke up to a thud sound at 4 am. Flagtail had jumped out of the 29gal. Put him back into the 187 and is doing much better.

I was just telling someone that i had never lost a fish in the two years ive been keeping. I guess i wrong now. I feel so stupid. Back to square one.

That's rough man I'm so sorry. I came home from a funeral yesterday night and I was gone 36 hours and my shoal of rbp were all laying on the bottom barely breathing or moving, I immediatly drained 80% water and refilled, if I didn't do that first thing they would have died, high temps and high nitrates almost got mine too.

Keep on keeping on, Ull get some rad fish soon

Thanks for responding. I was begining to think no one cared. Nice to hear you got home in time to save them. I had no idea to be extra attentive durring high temps. Now i know. Thanks again.
