I have had my 150 gallon tank with 25 gallon wet dry running for about 4 weeks now. My nitrites have been at 5.0 for over a week now. Any suggestions to get this to drop? I have a ruby oscar in there that is doing fine. Thank You for any help.

If I am taking out water wont that take a lot of the bacteria out and there fore slow down the process? I was told by my lfs to just wait it out.

Bacteria cultures around porous surfaces, not in the water itself - your filter media as well as your substrate and decorations are what contain the bacteria...

although the majority of your biological filtration will be on porous surfaces as mentioned by dirtyblacksocks (great name) make sure that you don't change too much water. no more than 30% at a time. i wonder why your nitrites would be so high for weeks.
1. make sure your test kits aren't screwy. check regular tap water
2. be sure you're reading the test kit probably

Thanks guys. Yea my test kits are fine. I went to the lfs and it tested out the same. He said my ph was perfect as well as ammonia.

You can also get a culture of already cycled substrate or filter media and put it in your tank to help speed up the process...

This is the best way IMO. After things are in check (which will happen quickly this way) you can then start water changes.
