Nitrite problems...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
how are you cleaning your filter? As mentioned by someone esle, you don't need to add chemicals or special media. You just need to get your bio filtration worked out. By special media I meam purigen or ammo chips, you need bio media.

hes trying to say:

NO PURIGEN
NO AMMONIA REMOVER
NO CHEMICALS

just go to your lfs and ask for their filter media, find something you like that will fit somewhere in your filter and stuff it in
keep up with water changes and lighter feedings until the problem is solved

good luck :D

Sorry, I didn't know you didn't have any media in your canister.. yeah, you need to get your cycle setup first like everyone above said. Just keep monitoring your water level until it goes down.

replace the carbon with bio media. When you clean the filter do it in a bucket of tank water so you dont kill the bb. If you just started using this filter that is the problem - it's not cycled yet.

i was told that was fine since the water is already cycled

Nope the bb lives in the filter, if it were only in the water it would be gone everytime you changed the water, causing a crash. There is bb in the water and all over the tank and decor, even the glass. However the majority of it lives in the filter media. That's actually the point of bio media - to provide a huge amount of surface area (in a small space) for the bb to colonize.

Get some bio media in there and if you have another tank, or a friend with one, take a dirty sponge and rinse in out in your tank; all the crud that comes out is loaded with bb and will fast cycle your tank. It will look like crap for a day but you're water will be safer for you fish. You can ask the LFS to rinse one out in a bag for you and them dump it in you tank.

Even after you add your media keep doing daily w/c's until your beneficial bacteria establishes itself on your filter media..............

Just bought some Seachem Purigen and replaced it with the carbon and did a 50% WC.
