Nitrite spike after filter maintenance.help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what filters are you running and what media do you have in them? Also what size is your name and how many 2-3in red bellies do you have in it?
40g with an aquaclear 70 with fluval bio media and large sponge filter as a grow out tank for 4 redbellies.

Every species has a certain tolerance for nitrite, some are harmed by nitrite as low as 0.1ppm.

Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt (can be table salt) per 10g of water and add to the tank everyday until nitrites disappear. This will add an extra layer of protection against nitrite poisoning.
if I have a 40g do I add 4 tsp everyday with water change?

idk for some reason my aquarium has like no nitrate or nitrite but it has bacteria blooms....

looks like you have some plants and gravel in there it probably needs to be cleaned and the plants might require a thicker sponge media

Everyday until nitrite is no longer measured even after water change. Dissolve salt first in a container with tank water before slowly adding it to the filter output

I just did put some. just did wc bec nitrite is at .5ppm.. now it’s at .25 so hopefully it doesn’t go up higher... double dosed with prime, seachem stability, fluval biological booster and I took some filter floss out of my other tank. Fed very little. hopefully things get better tomorrow. thank u so much for taking time to help :)

Cleaning out your filters shouldn’t do this if you did it properly. The cause could be uneaten food or waste hiding somewhere that caused a spike in ammonia.

yeah idk why, still trying to figure it out. Throwing away the really dirty filter floss that was in the filter was the only thing I did...I’ve been feeding for the past 2 weeks the same way and been doing 10% water change twice a week before I cleaned out the filter.. the tank was set up november and cycled and added fish two weeks ago..

How did you keep the bacteria fed since It was cycled? Or did it just cycle the same day you added fish?

Dr Tim’s ammonia and fed it every time it went down below 2ppm ammonia until I added fish.. Before I cleaned the filter parameters were 0 ammonia 0 nitrite 20 nitrate with twice feeding daily
