nitrite spike best ways to control

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok maybe i will be clear.these tanks are not underfiltered at all they are extremely over filtered.the nitrite and ammonia was stabilized last week.I did 50% wc on them and now the nitrite is around .25ppm in both tanks.I added prime and stopped the wc.I know exactly where the tanks are at with their cycle, just about their.the tanks are cycled but damaged due to over cleaning 3 weeks ago.i just need a boost.I am going to start with nutrafin cycle or a better bio boost to give it a bit more help.

i dont see any problem adding bio boosters too tanks that are just about cycled ,do any of you???

and what is the best type of bio booster for nitrite.they are all pretty much the same i think??? anybody know different.

will prime remove bio boosters????

The bio boosters are fine but in the meantime your fish need to be treated for nitrite toxicity, so you need to add salt.

And this. NitrItes are very dangerous, and any levels will prevent the fish from having adequate oxygen uptake in the gills. Salt will help to counteract this.

I don't know, he does say he has a heavy bioload, and ammonia oxidizing activity inhibits Nitrobacters. Since his ammonia didn't spike, but his nitrite did, it makes me believe that he has so much ammonia that the Nitrobacters are being affected (those are the ones that turn nitrite into nitrate). By adding more media he adds more room for the Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacters to live, so that the process of ammonia oxidization does not affect the Nitrobacters.

I agree. In addition a tank with more sites for bb will be able to deal with changes in the environment more quickly.....

Just my experience.... And yes, salt

their has been salt running in that tank for a few days and overloaded with o2.added a heavy dose of cycle last night and today. Is their any ill effects to using to much cycle or boosters at once, just did tests the ammonia is 0ppm the nitrates 5ppm nitrites .25ppm.also did about 60% water change yesterday but going to stop wc for a bit and see what happens.

nitrites at zero today.added heavy shot of cycle yesterday.

the tanks are overstocked and undersized for whats currently living in their, but i do have a large 1400 gallon in my basement cycling i just started up about 5 weeks ago.

This is music to our ears. Glad everything worked out.
