bellevue, ne
ive had my sw tank set up for over a month and have been carefully monitoring the water parameters. i had a little ammonia spike at the beginning but it went away and now 3 weeks later i get a huge! nitrite spike no ammonia and few nitrates. what could cause this type of spike?

it just killed my coral beauty and probably my anemome(keeping my fingers crossed for a pull through) i did a large water change to reduce the nitrites and have treated with amquel and stability. i dont think i can handel any more loss.

perfectly normal

cycling takes between 21 days to as long as 6 weeks!

looks like you got the ammonia bacteria going, now your are in the second phase, the nitrifiers! these bacteria take much longer time to grow (they double about every 8 hours). Go out to your lfs and get some marineland biospira.

and make sure it is for Salt Water! Keep up with the water changes.

You have to wait out that nitrite spike. It can come at any time and it will hit you hard. Every new tank gets it no matter what you do you just have to be patient when stocking your tank. Don't feel bad. when I first started up one of my 55's I had a huge maroon clown. A greenbird wrasse, and a one-spot fox face and they were all dead within 2 days of the spike. It is a hard lesson that most people learn the hard way.
