So I started up my 450 4 months ago now. Months prior to setting up the tank I loaded the sump of my 180 with bio media to get it established for the new tank. When I started up the 450 I used 6 silver dollars to cycle it, seachem stability, and put all the pre-established media into the simp. 2 months went by and the tank never cycled since the media was already established so I slowly started adding more of my stock into the tank over the next month or so. When I added more fish the nitrite went up to .25ppm and since has never gone down. Ammonia had always been 0. PH I keep at 7. I noticed about a month ago that my KH was really low. It was at 0. Since I've been doing a 40% water change once a week and using reef builder as my buffer to raise the KH and it's now at 50 ppm. I've also been dosing with stability to try and keep the bio filter strong. I was hoping that since the KH was going up the biofilter would be working better and breaking down the nitrite to 0. The nitrite is still sitting at .25 and I can't get rid of it.... Any thoughts?? Anyone have any other suggestions to break down the nitrite?? Someone told me to try using plants as they break down nitrogen?? Ideas??

Also.. fish are all perfectly healthy in the tank. I just don't want to add the rest of my stock the the little bit of nitrite I have still.

When you do your water changes do you use prime or safe, also check your tap. Try feeding less just to see if that will help.

sure we talking nitrite and not nitrate?

not sure what your prob could be, could be tank is not quite done cycling, could be not enof filtration for stock or a combo of both, or rinsing medias in tap water instead of old tank water there by knocking your cycle back. the chemistry is the chemistry, the number are the numbers.

as an FYI between ammonia, nitrite and nitrate , nitrite is the worst for fish. I take it the water is never cloudy?

Tank turns over 4000 gph. 2 filter socks that get changed twice a week... The stock that's in the tank was all in my 180 with no problems...

The tank is never cloudy.

I know that low hardness can cause the bio filter to not work properly. Now that I've raised it I was hoping it would break down the nitrite. Maybe it can take a while for the bio filter to be working good again?

The sump is loaded with bio balls. Which I've always used and they've always worked for me although a lot of people don't like them.... maybe try adding another media like bio chem stars?

I am a matrix fan, but either way. high nitrites and not ammonia say tank/filter not fully cycled. what does nitrates read?
