Hey guys im having a problem with my nitrites. I added an arowana to my tank about a week ago and now my nitrites r around 4ppm. How can i get this down. This past friday is when i noticed it so i did a 25% wc then and yesterday i did a 10% wc and still the nitrites r staying where they r. any suggestions?

do you have any ammonia? How new is the tank? Was it cycled? How big was the arowana? What was in the tank prior?

Usually, a new fish adds increased bio load on the tank/filters. You need to grow more beneficial bacteria to turn the nitrite into nitrate.

I would continue to do large water changes 50%+ each day until the nitrite disappears completely.

:iagree:check for ammonia, daily 50% water changes till ammonia and nitrite are zero.

Is a little Ammonia okay to grow the beneficial bacteria even with fish, or is water changes the way to go until levels are cleared up.. I have the same issue.. I think I removed the slide-in filter to soon where by bacteria was, on a newly cycled tank and the nitrites flew up.. Added stress-zyme and Amquil with water change.. Are water changes still the recommended option until levels are lowered?

I would keep up with the water changes. The bacteria will still grow and it'll be safer for the fish.

I found that it does break down and eliminate ammonia, however will be absorbed by charcoal filter media. So I would still add this to water changes and will being WC's for they next few days.. Thanks.

Howdy,

What biofiltration do you have, size tank, and stock?

In any case: Stop feeding until this is sorted out.

Best of luck,
