Ok I've never had nitrite reading at all till today. What causes it and besides w/c how can I fix it.couple changes to the tank... 1. Adding new crushed coral substrate 2. Removing undergravel filter. Feeding is every 3-4 days w/c schedule is twice a week 220gallon stock include 5 peacock bass.10-15 inches 1 oscar10in 2 channel cats 10in 1 tsn 13in 1 ck 12 in 1 softshell turtle. If your gonna tell me my tank is overstocked etc.. Please dont leave anythin at all thanks
It's from changing your substrate I bet... You had a lot of beneficial bacteria in your old substrate with the undergravel filter and now you're going through another cycle. You can move some established media from another tank if you have it, or use something like Seachem Stability, or just do water changes with an ammonia neutralizing water conditioner like Prime or Amquel.
You're previously biological filter is an undergravel filter, the biomedia is the substrate. Normally if you just remove the undergravel filter only, not much damage will happen. But you change the whole substrate and now you lost tons of nitrifying bacterias. Your tank is going through another nitrogen cycle again. I suggust dose Stability to kickstart the cycle and 5x Prime daily to render the ammonia and nitrite harmless during the process.
the ammonia is stable and im not totally replacing the substrate thats why im like wtf is goin on cause im only adding more not taking any out just the undergravel...
By taking out the undergravel filter you no longer have any water flow through your gravel where the bacteria has colonized. Cut back on feedings and increase water changes for a while. Proper filtration and maintenance is a must if you are going to overstock your tank.
