Quick question.
Is there a totally safe, non bleach way to regenerate purigen without any risk?
I want it's benefits in my discus tank but can't be bothered to spend 10 dollars every so often and I'm not comfortable with anything in this particular tank coming in contact with bleach.
(It's a discus tank)

After you recharge it with the bleach just soak it water with prime. I have done this several times and it has never hurt any of my fish including the delicate ones.

+1

if you rinse afterwards you will be fine. I used to use bleach to clean my diffusers on my planted tank. Never had an issue

I'm still really uncomfortable exposing an absorbent material to bleach...

What about ph issues?

They used to say to soak in ph neutral regulator after the prime. Apparently they changed that now. I recharge mine. I do the prime step twice though to be sure. I also do the ph neutral step regardless as this also deals with chlorine etc. Touch wood no issues up to now.

Why the fear of using bleach? The chlorine in bleach dissipates after 24 hour exposure to the air. Chlorine neutralizers work almost instantaneously.

X2

Been using Purigen for about 20 years this way.

I bleach almost anything aquarium related that needs a good cleaning.

If you're really that concern then google "bleach test strips". Its a paper strip test that will indicate the ppm of bleach in water.

Take the treated purigen, soak in a container containg some tank water, let it sit for a few hours, then use the test strips

X all of the above...

Been using it for a few years and have never had any issues. Follow the directions and if your like me, do the clean up stage twice, just for poops and grins. :D
