No Center Brace?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I haven't seen that size tank specifically, but some of the older tanks were made with really thick glass and didn't need a center brace. This is perfect for saltwater as it give you greater light exposure. The newer tanks are made with a much thinner glass and without the center brace will bow really bad and eventually leak or fall apart from the pressure. Look at the top housing to see if the brace was ever there. If it was removed or broken off you should be careful. If there is no sign of it ever having a center brace you will be ok, just look for a thicker glass and water test it before you buy it. You will see the bow immediately if the brace was supposed to be there. Good luck!

They said its 1/2 inch thick glass and that it holds water. In the picture it doesnt look like it had a brace but im trying to get more info from them before I go get it. It may be a little more than 100 gallons. Could it be a tank that never needed a brace due to 1/2 inch thick glass? Its only 20 inches high.

+1

I had a very old 125 that did not have a brace. It sat on a steal frame stand and the glass was very thick. I never had issue with it and now my best friend has that tank.

Yes, you will know right away when you look at the frame if a brace has been broken off as the plastic will be rough/uneven. A 6' tank with 1/2 inch thick glass is going to be real heavy. Better bring plenty of muscle.

If it's 1/2 glass it is a show tank that will not have a brace. I hope you have a lot of freinds when it comes to moving. Those things a really heavy.

So, 72in x 18in x 20in? If these are correct dimensions then it's a 115gal.

Check HERE to see the calculation for yourself... I would be careful. If you could hunt down a center brace, it's really easy to replace them.

Also, if the frame looks like it never had a brace... You could tell them that this will be more money that you have to spend to replace it and that they are lucky that it didn't leak. But you are willing to take it off of their hands for $xx.00 lower than what they want!

Don't ever be affriad to negotiate properly. Find selling point to "sell" the seller on "Why" they should let the item go for less!

I'm telling you that it works! I do it constantly!

I've been gong back and forth with a guy about a 95gal Clarlity Plus that's in MINT condition and comes complete. He wanted 700. I ended up telling him that I wouldn't go any more than 450, After telling him that I would have to clean this thing up to use as a FW Aquarium. Also that it's 5 years old. AND that there were other tank that were New on CL that I could get that were larger but for the same price!

He came back today with "How about 500?"!!!! And that's how it works! :D

I have an old (around 30 years, at least) 110 long that is 72x18x20. It is built from 1/2 inch glass and didn't have any bracing. I added a glass center brace, because I didn't like the way the tank bowed without it.

Ah see! That's not hard either is it? Did you add the brace with the tank on it's side or by the use of Clamps?

Did you take any pics?
