Well my quest for getting a male umbee has failed. I put a 6" Marbled Pim Catfish in with my umbee in its 180 on friday and the umbee turned jet black in its upper and lower dorsal fins so i got a female(damnit).. So i took the umbee to the fish store i volunteer at and decided to go with a primitive tank. The 180 currently holds (6"Marbled Pim Catfish, 5" Jardini Arowana, 6" Ornate Bichir, 7" Common Pleco, and 2- 5" Ocellaris Peacock Bass).. so i'm pretty excited about that. Anyways i friend of mine bought my 5" FlowerHorn and i bought 3 juvenile Pure Trimacs that came from Rapps and i'm planning to put them in my new 120Tall once the tank is completed later this week. Hopefully i can get a breeding pair out of them and start raising good quality Trimacs that are pretty hard to come by these days due to the many FH strains. My question is how big do trimacs have to be to be sexually mature to breed?

not true I sell pure baby trimac. unlike rapps i only charge 4.50 for them.

well if you are willing to wait it out talk to kevin at a place for pets he told me hes going to try to get some 5 to 6 inch wild cought umbees

Yeah thats where i volunteer at kevins store. Thats where i just got my trimacs from. And i love my new set-up for the 180 so i'm done with umbee's for awhile. I'll have to ask kevin about the wild caught males. And mayhem it was a mistake. I was crushed when i saw the black. 4 months of work and getting nothing except now i know what umbee's are all about. Its simple, the females grow larger quicker and turns the majority of males to a sub-dominant position and eventually the female will kill the males. Now remember this was all in a 38gallon but hell they were all under 3.5"'s..... So in return you get one dominant pissed off killer that makes you think must be a male...."WRONG"...Mine at 4" had some serious green all over its body and its face was getting bronzer everyday. But i relaize now all the effort there is out there to get a male umbee and to me its been a disappointing run for most of us. To all those who have male umbee's "Congratulations"........ :headbang2

I sell for one of the largest fish farms in the us. there hasn't been a wild cought umbee imported in the states in well over a decade... I think the exact number is 35 years. I'll ask Andrese to make sure. any pet store owner or whole saler that tells you different is lying out his ass. Umbee reside in south south panama near columbia. The last farmer that went down there to get some dissapeared. We get most of our breeding stock our selfs like a lot of farmers. tell you one thing. I aint going to columbia for NO fish. it isn't worth my life.

wrong. the reason it's hard to get male umbee right now is because when breeders get a batch of new umbee they are put in a large vat. the males grow faster then the females. when we get orders for 200 umbee and they say what sizes do you have we say 1"-2" and 3". well i want 200 3"ers. ok well there goes all of our males. then when the rest get bigger and make it out to pet shops they are all females. and we always sell to the brokers before the pet shops. so thats why all your getting is females right now. wait a little longer. ill let you know when the next batch of umbee make it around.
