So I tried adding feeder convicts to some of my tanks multiple times. Most of the time, the convicts avoided predation and grew too large to eat and began to nip at the intended predator and they were traded into my LFS or fed to my wolf fish.

The most recent time though, I added about 10 small 1/2-1" convict fry to my 40 gallon tank with a red tail vampire tetra, nandus nandus and ageneiosus catfish as well as other fish.

Today I woke up to a dead Emporer Pleco whose stomach was torn open and two convicts eating at it's insides. And my Ageneiosus catfish was torn up pretty badly as well (but he did survive).

Needless to say, all the convicts got the wolf fish treatment once I destroyed my tank in order to catch them.

Convict feeders IMO can only work in a bare tank with large cichlids that will not wait to eat a fish.

i dont belive a fish like the convict should be treated as a feeder fish.

Are you kidding dear? they're like a buck each, just need a pair and they'll breed. all you need is water and something flat to lay. mine once spawned while i was out of town for a week and accidently left the tank unplugged after a water change. the airstone was going so i didn't notice the filter and heater was off

infact, my lfs won't even take them for trade in for credits because they're so cheap

No I'm not kidding.. I can get rosy reds or whatever they are.. or even a mix of feeders for 10 for a buck.. that sounds better to me.. And it just sounds weird to me... I'm just not familiar with it..

I like to feed ghost shrimp.. that's more fun (funner) to me!

Oh and don't call me "dear"..! jk

i'mma show you something. rosey reds are bad for your fish.

simple economic says an endless supply of fry for 2 bucks is better then 10 for one buck, lmao, just saying

Edit: lol, well, you don't have your name on the real name section and babe or hun sounded too personal and like i'm hitting on you....so dear won out.

At work, employees get half off the fish and the convicts were originally 50 cents a piece. I try to give my fish a mix instead of just rosy reds and goldfish. I try to mix it up a little for them and get them zebra danios or small assorted tetras once a week. IMO just eating goldfish and rosy reds is like only being able to eat chicken every day.

yeah...except the chicken would reduce your growth.

I got 7 convict fry for super cheap a few weeks ago that I am going to attemp to breed as feeders. I breed guppies in a 10g but they are too small now. I attempted swordtails but they're just too slow unless I pull the fry and put more effort into them than I care to ATM. The only times I've bred convicts was at the LFS and totally by accident (actually quite annoying, had to pull all the tankmates with nowhere to put them) and then we sold and used the fry as feeders until each batch was gone. Worked great.
Plus, mine are mostly for the electric cat and I don't much worry that they'll become a nuisance in his tank. If they do, they will have my undying respect and I would blacklist them as a choice in feeders, lol.
