no more hikari in canada!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just so there's no confusion, this does not neccessarily mean that Hikari will no longer be imported into Canada. For whatever reason some distributors here in Canada have dropped the Hikari lne of foods, in turn this has affected many retail vendors that those distributors supplied.
This could end up being a regional thing, that varies from one Province to the next.

This goes back to what I previously posted;

Some of you may find that certain brands of pet food may no longer be available in Canada due to the cost, time, and headache to bring them into our country. In speaking with a few of the larger distributors they are most definitely dropping certain brands of pet food as it will simply no longer be cost effective to import them.

This does not equate to something being illegal, simply that for whatever reason certain distributors are no longer going to carry it. Perhaps even that could change down the road, hard to say at this point how this will all play out.

I've heard the CAD distributors side of the story, and I don't expect that anyone from Hikari USA (or the home office in Japan) are going to be making any public service announcements anytime soon.

Also keep in mind that Hikari Sales USA is the North American importer of Hikari products, they are not the manufacturer.

here is hikari's response to my email inquiry, not informal IMO

Hikari is not illegal, the CFIA has changed and is constantly changing the requirements for any pet food which is imported in to Canada. Since fish food is technically a pet food it is being put under all the requirements for dog and cat foods which are quite different. This is what is causing the temporary out of stock.

I'd sure love for that rep to explain in detail what they meant by the following comment.

Since fish food is technically a pet food it is being put under all the requirements for dog and cat foods which are quite different.

Should feed designed & marketed for pet fish, not come under the same amount of scrutiny as that for pet dogs & cats?

Yes, the regulations have recently changed, but scores of other fish food manufacturers & CAD importers (myself included) haven't experienced so much as a hiccup with any of our shipments.

This is happening here in Calgary AB as well, most of my LFS's told me same story and they are running really low on Hikari food products. Better start buying what u can and what ever is left.

I wouldn't worry too much, there's plenty of high quality fish food available in cow town. ;)
