No more water changes!!!! Sorry long post.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you don't have an auto shut off for your drip in case the power is out?

This is the beauty of this system. The water keeps flowing even after a power outage. Your still changing the water. I've had my system running for 4 years now and one extended power outage. No issues no deaths, the power was only out about 6 hours maybe 8 but at least I still had a little flow in my system. I add my trickle to my tank and my overflow/drain is in my sump, even with power outages water is still flowing through all my filters and out to my yard.

Exactly right!

I have a similar set up I dont keep it running all the time due to the to the wife :irked:
How does the water company "nuke" the water?
Also I will be in Toledo this holiday weekend visiting the inlaws what cool petshops are up there?

nice!
so do you just not condition the water coming in?
is it just such a small amount it doesnt matter or whats the deal?
i want to do this on my 300 but have rays and such so i want to make sure i dont get a bunch of chlorine and such
i guess you can do this off of a ro di unit??
that would be even better!!

When we have heavy rains we seem to get more run off/pollution and the water company dumps anywhere from 2-10x the amount of chemicals into the water.

Most people can run a few simple tests to see if theri water company uses chlorine or chloramine. Then you can get the appropriate filter. I do not use a filter but my drip runs into the intake side of my sump then travels through all the media and bio-filtration then into the tank. I have tested again and again an have no chlorine or chloramine in the tank.

How does a drip system work ? Is this just dripping water into the tank as the rest evaporates ? I don't understand how it changes the water.

Very cool - I have the almost exact same setup on my 300. Do you find that 3/4gph is better? Was it a big difference? I'm still using 1/2gph and my water tests pretty good.

I can't put my drain hose into a basement drain, so if my drain line freezes I have a sensor that detects the water rising above the normal level that will shutoff the flow. I believe it's called floodstop - used mainly for appliances.

It's such a simple concept, it kills me I haven't been doing this longer.

Step 1: You need some kind of drain from your tank or your sump. I have anacrylic sump so I drilled a hole in the side of it and ran a pipe to my yard.
Step 2: You need 1/4 inch flexible tubing, something for RO systems or pipingyou would run to your ice maker. "T" off some cold water line, I usethe washing machine line because my laundry room is right behind my fish tank.I ran the line to the top of my fish tank to a needle valve and adjusted thatto about 1 gallon per hour. Done.
How does this work?
One gallon of water drips into my fish tank per hour, 24 gallons per day, 168gallons per week. That clean water mixes with the fish water and overflows downto my sump (I keep the clean fresh water as far away from the over flow aspossible so it has time to mix with the dirty water). The sump starts tooverflow now because 1 extra gallon of water is going into it. That extragallon will flow out the drain you put in your sump. Simple huh?
